Description: Kids at home? This experiment shows how to create a mini electric motor using just a few items from around the house. ITEMS NEEDED: Copper wire (the shorter the wire, the faster it will rotate) Two small neodymium magnets One AA battery Pair of needle nose pliers A WORD OF CAUTION: Neodymium magnets are strong and can deliver one heck of a pinch. Make sure you supervise so you don't have pinched fingers that ruin the fun. THE SCIENCE: The copper wire connects the battery positive and battery negative terminal to complete the circuit. What this means is that a current of electrons will flow through the wire. The magnets create a magnetic field to create the Lorentz force. The Lorentz force is exerted on electrons and protons (charged particles) moving with velocity through electric AND magnetic fields at the same time. This also happens at the Earth's magnetosphere where it separates positive and negative charges. So long as the wires don't touch each other at the bottom, current will flow in both wires from the top of the battery to the bottom. The current then flows into the magnets where the magnetic field points outward toward the wire surrounding it. When electric current passes through a wire in a magnetic field, magnetic interactions produce torque which moves the wire. The wire and the magnet have magnetic fields around them and these fields exert a force on the wire causing the wire to spin.
